You may know what you want to achieve this year and how you are going to make it happen. It’s all very well to have an intention and a set of clear business goals. HOWEVER – What gets in the way?
The Daffodillar philosophy is simple – If you clear the clutter, it will pave the way for creativity, productivity and acting on your intention.
You know your intention so CLEAR space to connect and commit to it.
Mia Freedman started Mumma-mia in her lounge room. It shows you don’t need a fancy desk, glamorous chair and a shiny rose gold stapler for domination within your zone of genius.
Let’s look at your office ? Here is how we’re going to get it sorted and keep it simple – give yourself a fixed amount of time and set a timer to keep you on track. Eg 60-90 mins
Empty your desk. All of it. Remove everything- noticeboards, pins, vision boards, quotes, cards and photos. Go to other cupboards and drawers around the home or desk space and collect all the pens, pencils, post it notes, usbs, folders; when they are all on the table the full effect is felt. “I didn’t know I have a thing for orange pens!”
Ok if you “have enough for a lifetime” you have too many. You only need enough for now. The highlighters will not make getting ‘there’ easier or brighter. You will. You choose to be ambitious, hard working, determined, open minded and willing to make sustainable change.
Favourite notebooks? Post-its? Article, mags, brochures? You have a pile of them? You don’t need them.. Schedule a time to blog your thoughts within the fortnight or into recycle they go. If you have not actioned them in 2017 or before they are not your priority so you have fourteen days to prove us wrong
Emma Isaacs said two of her biggest tips for success are delegation and … “letting go”. A notebook/ business journal for this year can be the leftover 96 page exercise book you found last week and you only need 1. Let go of the odds and sods.
Apply this method to your clips, staplers, folders and papers. Scan, digitize. Recycle, shred. Have a small to medium box of papers that are for action. If they are not actioned in a month (set the non-negotiable time in your calendar) they are shredded, recycled, binned.
Now let’s get set for your best workspace, YOU NEED a space to set up your main business tools eg a laptop, an iPad, your phone, a notebook/ business journal, a pen/ pencil and a glass of water. On the desk are only items you use every time you sit to work. They can be easily packed away in a cloth/ leather satchel ready for tomorrow’s meeting or the top drawer of your desk. ‘Everything else’ does not need to be out .The items you use most will ‘win’ the top drawer. First drawer closest to you is for the ‘every time’ items. Next drawer is for ‘sometimes’. The last drawer? Let’s aim for empty! An empty space reminds you of your intention to live with what you love and need for practicality to live your life with focus and meaning.
Empty gives rise for possibility.
Lastly – review the position of your desk. Can it be by a window for natural light?. Can you have your vision board on Pinterest? Do you need it in your everyday? On my desk I always have a vase or jar of greenery, flowers . What personal touch do you like on yours?
Now it isimportant that you don’t keep the unwanted items in boxes or bags, behind the door or in another space.
To finish the declutter properly walk out to the bin and recycle rubbish and put other items in the car for donation. Ask before you drop off at your local school or kinder. I highly recommend www.theschoolproject.org.au
You are now ready for work. To grow, move forward and achieve.
I look forward to hearing how you go, your challenges and your wins.
