Business teaches you a load of things, possibly the most important are lessons about yourself.
How you handle fear, procrastination, self-doubt, failure.
How you learn to push through the tough stuff.
Learning to get back up after you fall down.
Learning to kick your own arse when you need it, and hug it when you need it too.
Learning to have an unwavering self-belief.
Learning that procrastination is really just your fear talking.
Learning to get out of your own damn way.
One of my biggest personal lessons in my business journey has been to follow my fear.
If you learn to follow your fear you can deal with the root of the problem rather than continuing in your cycle of self-sabotage.
I find my fear talks mostly through negative thoughts and procrastinating.
How I stop my self-sabotage cycle goes alot like this:
- Procrastinating (this generally comes in the form of procrasti-dog-cuddling, procrasti-cleaning, procrasti-carrot-eating)
- I catch myself procrastinating (this is the hard part, takes practice!)
- Name the task I’m avoiding
- Name my fear surrounding me finishing that task
- Give myself a pep-talk or arse-kicking (this will depend on my mood for the day or the scenario)
- I come up with a mantra that deals with my fear. Eg if I’m afraid my work won’t be good enough, I tell myself I am good enough and I back it up with evidence from all the times clients have adored me, or I have had a big win. This generally goes on a bright pink Post-It on my iMac screen.
- Take action in the opposite direction
Learning to follow your fear is one of the best skills I’ve learned to create change in my life. It cuts through your excuse-making and leads you to take action in the opposite direction which brings you results, baby!
Are you sick of your fear? Sick of the lack of change in your life? Are you ready for action?
